HOT DAY FOR FIRST TORBAY EXPRESS OF SUMMER 2017
HOT DAY FOR FIRST TORBAY EXPRESS OF SUMMER 2017

It was a scorching hot day for the first Torbay Express steam train of summer 2017; so hot and dry in fact that Network Rail imposed a steam ban and we had to run with diesel assistance. As you can see by the photo above, courtesy of Robert Sherwood, Tornado No 60163 looked magnificent, as usual.

The next Torbay Express is on 2 July, when Tornado will again be hauling the train (subject to the usual provisos).

Countdown to first Torbay Express of summer 2017

We are on the countdown until the first Torbay Express of summer 2017, as it's now less than eight weeks until 18th June. We are starting to get excited and hope you are too!

High Speed Tornado on Torbay Express
High Speed Tornado on Torbay Express

As you will no doubt be aware Tornado No. 60163 recently ran at 100mph on the East Coast Main Line (ECML) between Doncaster and Newcastle during trials to increase its running speeds for main line operations. So we have our fingers crossed about the speed that may be achieved when Tornado is hauling the Torbay Express this summer.

For a detailed report on Tornado's high speed trials please have a look at the A1 Trust website.

TORNADO TO HAUL TORBAY EXPRESS

We are delighted to announce that the Torbay Express on 4 and 11 September 2016 will be hauled by iconic Tornado No. 60163.

Tornado is a Peppercorn class A1 Pacific steam locomotive built by the A1 Steam Trust to the original design and which made its first public moves in steam in August 2008.

PADDLE STEAMER 'KINGSWEAR CASTLE' ON 11 SEPTEMBER
PADDLE STEAMER 'KINGSWEAR CASTLE' ON 11 SEPTEMBER

We have been advised by the Paignton & Dartmouth Railway that the Paddle Steamer 'Kingswear Castle' will NOT be running the 1 ¼ hour river cruises on Sunday 11th September 2016 at 12:00, 14:00 or 15:30. It will instead be operating a river cruise lasting approximately 50 min departing Dartmouth at 13:30, 14:30 and 15:30.

The price will be £8.50 instead of  the usual £15.

ROYAL SCOT ON STAND-BY
ROYAL SCOT ON STAND-BY
Just in case Lord Dowding isn't repaired in time for the last two Torbay Expresses of the season (4 & 11 September) Royal Scot will be on stand-by. We are keeping our fingers (and toes) firmly crossed!

TORBAY EXPRESS 7 AUGUST
TORBAY EXPRESS 7 AUGUST

Unfortunately Lord Dowding 34052 (aka Braunton No. 34046) has developed a technical/mechanical problem so will not be available to haul the Torbay Express on 7 August. It is to be replaced by Tornado No.60163. We are looking forward to welcoming Tornado.

It is expected that the remaining three trains in this summer's programme (21 August - via Bath Spa, 4 September - via Weston-super-Mare and 11 September - via Bath Spa) will be hauled by  Lord Dowding, subject, as usual, to passing all the requisite tests.
